What a fantastic show! Although the actual floor space may have been smaller than in the past years, the attendance was great and we enjoyed meeting up with many of our concrete floor customers.

While in Las Vegas, Aztec unveiled the new UltraGrind to an overwhelming amount of positive feedback. The UltraGrind is the ultimate propane powered, planetary head, gear driven, concrete grinding machine. The excitement was high for this very flexible machine, designed for grinding, scarifying, and doing all general concrete floor preparation. People were particularly enthusiastic about the idea of eliminating the expense and restrictions that generators and cords bring to the scene. Not to mention the clean up of those cords once the job is complete…

Again this year there was a lot of interest in the Aztec ProScrub autoscrubber and the Aztec Reliant propane buffer – the only twin belted burnisher in the industry. Aztec is currently in the process of perfecting dust control and a water spray method to make the job easier for the contractor on the job.

While at the show, Aztec’s Vice President of Sales, Steven Spengler, along with our Technical Service Manager, Dave Groff attended several seminars involving all aspects of concrete, from Pre-Construction Planning to the Final Finish. “I have great respect for the concrete contractors, finishers and testing agencies who have invested education and training. They comply with the strict requirements and follow specs that bring out the very best in concrete floors for safety, appearance and longevity”, says Steven.

On the more adventurous side of the Las Vegas trip, Aztec employees made numerous “contributions” to various casinos along the strip, and also enjoyed some meals and music at the House of Blues, Mandalay Bay’s Foundation Room and Pure nightclub, to name just a few.

By the close of the World of Concrete show, the east coast was about to receive several feet of snow, and so the panic and scramble to find an uncancelled flight home became quite a challenge. Our Vice President of Sales, Steven Spengler, and our Administrative Assistant, Crystal Rose were temporarily stranded on the strip. But thank heavens for their continued patience, as they returned home on Super Bowl Sunday, just in time for the kick off.

The UltraGrind machine is complementary to the DiamondShine, which is specifically designed for ultra high speed, large area concrete polishing applications.

Weighing more than 500 pounds, the UltraGrind provides the ideal 40 pounds of head pressure per diamond abrasive for maximum results. The UltraGrind has industry-standard 2-inch exhaust ports for concrete dust vacuums.  The UltraGrind also has an 8 gallon water tank, potentially adding up to 80 additional pounds of head pressure, and allowing the user to re-wet the floor while grinding.  Like all of Aztec’s machines, it is made entirely in the USA.

The Aztec UltraGrind is powered by the new 26hp Kawasaki FX730V engine, featuring a heavy duty canister air filter.

Aztec looks at contractor equipment purchases not as a one-time transaction, but as the beginning or continuation of a long term partnership between Aztec and our customers.

It’s perfectly normal to shop around and compare prices and customer service when purchasing your cleaning equipment, however many don’t realize that the cost of buying multiple brands and models of equipment is much higher than it initially appears to be. Although it sometimes seems cost effective to buy whatever brand is on sale or cheapest today, this is actually a very expensive way to build an equipment fleet.

Well you could say it was a blustery visit to the windy city last October, but you could also call it a successful one too. The attendance was clearly down from years past, however the quality of the attendees was unmistakable and it was definitely worth the trip.

** News Flash - 80,000 sqft Retail Facility Stripped and Waxed in 1 Night with the Aztec Sidewinder System **

It was an emergency! Friday afternoon a Facilities Manager from a large retail chain called Dave Olmo, Owner of First Choice Building Maintenance in Deerfield Beach, Florida (954-480-6411). The store’s usual floor contractor had badly botched a strip job at the store the night before and a Regional VP was going to inspect his store on Monday morning. He knew of Dave by reputation wanted First Choice Building Maintenance to come Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights to fix the floors by stripping all the wax off and recoating them.

Dave told him that the only night that he had open that weekend was Saturday and asked him how big the store was. When the manager told him that it was 80,000 sqft. Dave said, “no problem, I can do that in one night and quoted him a price.” The manager told him that stripping and waxing the entire store in one night was impossible and was about to hang up when Dave stopped him. “I’ll tell you what,” Dave said, “I will guarantee that the store will be stripped and waxed in one night. If it is not, I will get someone to come back on Sunday to finish it and you won’t have to pay me a penny – but if it is done in one night like I promised, I want a 15% bonus on the price that I quoted you.” The Manager happily agreed thinking that he was going to get 2 days worth of work for nothing. After all, the store would only be closed for 8 hours on Saturday night.

When Dave and his five-man crew showed up at closing time Saturday he immediately started two guys dust mopping and two to clearing the floor of obstructions. The last guy he had on an Aztec Liquidator, spreading strip solution at a rate of 30,000sqft an hour. After giving the Liquidator a 15-minute head start, he started two of the guys on a pair of Aztec Sidewinder Stripping Machines and two on a pair of Aztec Guzzler sludge retrievers.

Four hours later the entire floor was stripped, neutralized and ready to wax. A couple coats of finish later, his crew was on their way home with time to spare. The store manager was so impressed, he happily offered to pay the bonus, but Dave declined. The VP loved the way his store looked and gave the Manager a good review. The Store Manager’s recommendations led to 12 more stores for First Choice Building Maintenance.

Dave tells it this way: “My first encounter with the Sidewinder was while working with a friend on a job in 1988. I was so blown away by the machine that I owned one within a week. That original Sidewinder that I bought in 1988 is still working! When you can do three nights worth of work in one night with fewer people you can make a lot more profit.
